Near Tunbridge Wells, on the A26, this pleasant old town is dominated by the 13th century gatehouse of a Norman castle demolished in the Civil War, and now surrounded by landscaped gardens. The town has spread along the road away from the River Medway, spanned by Victorian cast-iron bridge, and the northern part of the High Street has many attractive 18th and 19th century buildings.
