The buildingSituated in the middle of the Cinque Port of New Romney on the coast road between Hythe and Hastings, the Ship was built about 1492 and was used for smuggling contraband from across the channel. The tunnels used by the smugglers run underneath the hotel (closed off now) According to the original Charter, members of the Cinque Ports had the right to "soc and sac, tol and team, bloowit and fledwit, pillory tumbril infangentheof, outfangentheof, mundbryce waives and strays, flotsam and jetsam and ligan". Which meant the sailors from the Cinque Ports could do what they wanted, when they wanted - excellent training for smuggling!. The Ship Hotel has seven comfortable rooms (available on a B&B basis) plus a superb restaurant serving excellent food as well as bar meals. A combination that makes the pub an attractive place to stay while exploring this part of the Kent and East Sussex coasts. Rye, Hastings Hythe, Dymchurch and Folkestone are all within easy reach. There is also a function room catering for 80 people, an attractive beer garden, ample car parking and facilities for the disabled.
