The historic town of Maldon is one of the oldest in Essex. It straddles the top of a steep hill, with views over the picturesque Blackwater Estuary. It is famous for its sea-salt, named after the town, its annual mud race and its link with the London bookstore Foyle's.
Its founder William Foyle once had a fabulous library at his home in nearby Beeleigh Abbey, and the collection was recently sold at auction for a record sum.
Maldon has a population of around 20,000 people, and is one of the safest places in the country to live and work, with crime rates well below the national average.
The town has road links to Colchester, Chelmsford and Southend with a direct, but infrequent, bus running to the mainline railway station at Witham
Recently, new housing development has grown up on the outskirts of the town while the commercial industrial mix of business has gradually switched away from traditional fishing and farming to growth industries including web-design and tourism.
However the market town still reflects its roots, with markets held on Thursdays and Saturdays. Visitors have a plentiful choice of places to eat from restaurants to tea-rooms.
