Until recently one of Frinton's oft-quoted claims to fame was that inside The Gates there were no public houses - but in fact the resort's first pub, The Lock and Barrel, opened in September 2000. Frinton also has just one chip shop, which had to fight hard to win planning permission a few years ago.
