British Volunteer

The British Volunteer is a town centre pub with good access to transport – there’s a bus stop right outside - easy access from the ring road and its own car park with space for 20 cars.

This is a traditional pub, with a friendly atmosphere and a loyal band of regulars.

There is always the buzz of good-humoured conversation filling the bar, alongside the great beers, a jukebox, fruit machine and quiz machine. Occasionally live music is hosted too.

There is a useful meeting room available to hire, which is used by the community for many purposes, such as residents’ meetings, small parties and band practice. It can happily accommodate up to 35 people.

Outside there is a pleasant little garden with a grassed area with mature shrubs and a patio, suitable for smokers.

The pub was converted by the army in the 1860s from two old cottages which stood alongside barracks after several licensees in the town refused to serve troublesome soldiers.
