SHEPHERD NEAME AND THE COMMUNITY
No brewer is doing more than Shepherd Neame to retain the local pub as a centre of community life, or to ensure that the unique character of British pubs endures into the next millennium.
Both Shepherd Neame and its employees are active supporters of the local community. Company sponsorships include Kent County Cricket Club (pictured right), Kent Rugby Football Union, Kent Lawn Tennis, Folkestone Racecourse and, in partnership with Kent County Council, the North Downs Way.
At village level, Shepherd Neame supports local football, rugby and cricket teams. In 1993, the Shepherd Neame Youth Cricket Coaching Scheme, which continues today, was successfully launched.The Shepherd Neame Kent Journalist of the Year Awards has now been running for several years.
2004 saw the annual Shepherd Neame Sponsored Walk in association with the Kent Messenger Group raising £100,000 for 9 local hospices in Kent. The 2005 sponsored walk was a 10 mile circular walk starting and finishing at Challock Village Green, which raised £65,000 for 9 local hospices.
The 2006 walk was on Sunday 21st May and raised money for 10 local hospices. There was a choice of 7 or 11 miles starting at Bredgar & Wormshill Light Railway nr. Hollingbourne. The halfway point was at The Ringlestone Inn.
The 2007 Shepherd Neame / Kent Messenger walk took place atThe Port Lympne Wildlife Animal Park on Sunday 20th May, and raised £7,800 for each of the 10 hospices.
2008 Shepherd Neame / Kent Messenger walk will take place at Charing on Sunday 18th May.
