The “Spitfire" is again set to make tracks to Faversham for this year’s Hop Festival. The special trains will operate on Saturday 30th and
Sunday 31st August as Britain's
Oldest Brewer conjures up the atmosphere of the trains thatonce carried thousands of happy hop pickers from London to the Kentish countryside.
This year’s trains will also celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the railway first reaching Faversham so there will be additional festivities on-board and in the town – including a beer brewed specially to mark the occasion! The weekend’s operations will traverse the section of track between Faversham and the Medway Towns which opened for traffic in 1858. The Faversham Society’s special exhibition on the arrival of the railway in the town will be open throughout the weekend.
We are delighted that this year’s specials will be hauled by Southern Railway express passenger locomotive 34067 "Tangmere". The engine is one of the famous “Battle of Britain” class and spent much of it’s working life rushing between London and Kent at the head of famous trains such as the Kentish Belle and Golden Arrow.
